Leap of Space - Jamfuzer 7th Place!

Leap of Space was a fun project. We wanted to take the theme of space and make something simple for a small team. The main problems that arose were the movement of the character. Originally it was set up with WASD controls, moving the character up and down, left to right. The problem with this is that it took a while to get used to the movement, and didn't feel very intuitive. Therefore I made the choice to move it to purely mouse for the movement, and clicking would make the character boost in the direction of the cursor we added to the custom UI elements.

I designed traps and the level for the character to move through as the programmer's and artists carried on with their tasks. My main job was to ensure that the character could get from one side of the map to the other, without running out of fuel too easily. To do this, I made sure the character could boost over to the other side with no obstacles in the way first, and created pacing after this to help me figure out the min and max fuel (paint) the character needed to reach the end, and where to place the pickups. We completed this without an issue, but wanted to make sure the game had some gravitas, therefore I thought that it would be good if the player also had to pick up oxygen as well as new paint pots. I used a similar system to the paint to find out how long the player could stay alive for without running out of air. As I changed the map, I would ensure the pickups were fair, and also fun. I created multiple "lanes" the character could follow, and change between to make the game more interesting. I then scattered a few more pickups on the map as red herrings, guiding players into traps; this made the game way more fun, as it felt like the player had all the control of where they wanted to go.
